Messi beats Ronaldo and Rooney

MADRID - Barcelona's Argentine winger Lionel Messi outshines both Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in terms of media value, a team of Spanish researchers claimed on Friday.
The team from the University of Navarra rated last year's Golden Ball winner as the player with the highest profile in the world for the second year running.
Second was Real Madrid's Portuguese winger Ronaldo, the world's most expensive player, and third Manchester United striker Rooney, according to the annual study.
Real's Brazilian playmaker Kaka was fourth ahead of the Liverpool pair of Spanish striker Fernando Torres and English midfielder Steven Gerrard.
Ivory Coast centre forward Didier Drogba, Brazil winger Ronaldinho, Spanish central midfielder Xavi and Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic completed the top ten. European and Spanish champions Barcelona topped the club ranking, ahead of Real, Manchester United, Chelsea, AC Milan and Liverpool.
United's Sir Alex Ferguson beat Liverpool's Rafael Benitez and Inter Milan's Jose Mourinho to be named as the manager with the most media pulling power.
I feel that United's Sir Alex Ferguson should not be named as the manager with the most media pulling power as he as a bad reputation for reprimanding referees shamelessly. He is also renowned to support the bad boys of his team, such as Cristiano Ronaldo's divings. Rafael Benitez should also not be a candidate for this award as he does not delivers what he promised to the world; Champions League and Barclays Premier League. Instead, Liverpool, under his command, lost to teams which are struggling to prevent from being relegated, and got knocked out in the first few rounds. I feel that Jose Mourinho should earn the award as he commands well, bringing Chelsea to their closest to getting the title, and now he commands Inter Milan to dominate the Italian League.

Poem Analysis: Rainbow Death by Hubert Wilson

Poem Analysis: Rainbow Death by Hubert Wilson

America did not foresee
Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!
Expecting others to pay a high price.
Now thinking twice?
Toll on the innocent and unborn.

Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn.
Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead.
All the deceit continues to spread.
Nefariously America led astray -
Generations untold WILL pay -
Execrable effects of agent orange spray!

Hubert Wilson
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point of view:
The poem was written from an American soldier's perspective. During the Vietnam War, Hubert Wilson suffered health problems as he was exposed to the contaminant "Agent Orange". He experienced headaches and limb pains. Furthermore, his central nervous system radically deteriorated with type tremors like the Parkinson disease, severe headaches and progressive limb pains. This showed that even slight exposure to "Agent Orange" could cause had adverse effects on humans. The poem showed that Hubert Wilson strongly disapproved the usage of "Agent Orange" as he had seen many innocent civilians being killed by this contaminant and he himself suffered serious health problems, therefore he strongly disapproved the usage of "Agent Orange".

Situation and Setting:
The poem was referring to the cruel Vietnam war. The Americans had to use "Agent Orange" to destroy the communists hidden in the jungle. As a result, "Agent Orange killed many people and plants. The writer had seen the damage and deaths "Agent Orange" had caused in the Vietnam war, thus he was very angry towards the use of "Agent Orange" and even his own country.

Language and Diction
The poet used many strong words to show his disapproval of the use of "Agent Orange" in the herbicidal warfare. In stanza one, he wrote "America did not foresee green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!". The word "potpourri" refers to the mixture of ingredients. The poet may be writing that "Agent Orange" was made up of many poisonous ingredients of different colours that could cause many "death". The poet was probably questioning America whether using poisonous weapons to kill people was right or not, and here there's irony, as he did not trusted his own country. In stanza one, the writer used "Toll on the innocent and unborn". This again showed his anger towards "Agent Orange". He meant that many innocent civilians and unborn babies were killed even though they were not part of the war. He again showed his anger towards the cruelty the Americans. In stanza two, the poet used "Nefariously America led astray". This again showed that he was shocked and angered by the American usage of "Agent Orange". He also wrote "Generations untold WILL pay". This was to strengthen his belief that many innocent unborn babies would be killed, and thus he again portrayed America as a cold killer. He wrote "WILL" in capital letters so as to stress the cruelty of Americans towards innocent babies. From all of the above, I can infer that "Agent Orange" was not only hated by the North Vietnamese, but also the Americans themselves.

Personal Response
I think that the poem can ultamately show the cruelty of wars. People tend to develop better weapons to be used in the battlefields. However, when these weapons are used in wars, many soldiers and innocent people are to be killed, thus showing that more advanced war weapons can cause much more deaths. I think that joining the Vietnam War was not a very good option for the Americans. Based on this poem, I can infer that even the Americans themselves are guilty of their cruelty in the Vietnam war. Many Americans disapproved their country for being part of the effort of fighting Communism in Vietnam. With disapproval even in their country, the Americans would not be successful in the Vietnam War even with powerful weapons such as "Agent Orange". It only caused more deaths and allowed others to portray themselves as cruel and cold-blooded. This poem was probably written to tell us that war is a nightmare and the poet probably wanted to stress that it is very important for people to live together in harmony.

Poem Analysis: Rainbow Death by Hubert Wilson

This poem was written by an American soldier during the Vietnam War. The war was fought between communists North Vietnam together with China's People's Liberation Army, against the non-communists South Vietnam together with USA. During this war, the communists were outnumbered by their enemies, therefore it used guerrilla tactics against the Americans. Guerrilla tactics were a nightmare for the Americans, as the communists mostly hid in the jungles to attack their enemies. They lived in small groups and had no base camps, they would attack their enemies and run back into the forests. The Americans were very worried about this, and they developed a chemical weapon known as "Agent Orange" to destroy the communists in the jungle. Thus, the Americans started the Herbicidal Warfare program in Vietnam.

Those people who were exposed to "Agent Orange", even the Americans, had live-long health problems. Approximately 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects. From 1962 to 1971, "Agent Orange" was by far the most widely used of the so-called "Rainbow Herbicides" employed in the herbicidal warfare program. Thus, the writer wrote this poem to show his hatred towards "Agent Orange".

2010 Haiti and Chile Earthquakes

Chile Earthquake
At the start of 2010, 2 major earthquakes have already occurred. One in Haiti, and one in Chile. As said before, these earthquakes caused many deaths in both countries and many civilians are affected by these earthquakes.

The US Geological Survey says eight Haitian cities and towns – including the capital of 3 million people– suffered "violent" to "extreme" shaking in the 7-magnitude quake, which Haiti's government estimates killed some 220,000 people. Chile's death toll was in the hundreds.

By contrast, no Chilean urban area suffered more than "severe" shaking – the third most serious level – Saturday in its 8.8-magnitude disaster, by USGS measure. The quake was centered 200 miles (325 km) away from Chile's capital and largest city, Santiago.

The earthquake in Chile was far stronger than the one that struck Haiti last month, yet the death toll in Haiti is much higher. Why did this happen? The reasons are simple. Chile is wealthier and much better prepared, with strict building codes, robust emergency response and a long history of handling seismic catastrophes. In contrast, Haiti has never experienced such a major earthquake before, and thus were not prepared for such a major disaster.

Research also shows that the Chilean quake was centered offshore an estimated 21 miles (34 km) underground in a relatively unpopulated area while Haiti's tectonic mayhem struck closer to the surface – about 8 miles (13 km) – and right on the edge of Port-au-Prince, factors that increased its destructiveness.

Based on these information, we can conclude that being preapared to face an earthquake is very important. Many lives can be saved, just like the Chilean example.

Earthquakes

An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are recorded with a seismometer, also known as a seismograph. The moment magnitude of an earthquake is conventionally reported, with magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes being mostly imperceptible and magnitude 7 causing serious damage over large areas. Intensity of shaking is measured on the modified Mercalli scale.

The moment magnitude of an earthquake is conventionally reported. Earthquakes can be recorded by seismometers up to great distances, because seismic waves travel through the whole Earth's interior. The absolute magnitude of a quake is conventionally reported by numbers on the Moment magnitude scale, which is formerly Richter scale. Magnitude 7 causing serious damage over large areas. Magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes being mostly imperceptible. The felt magnitude is reported using the modified Mercalli scale (intensity II-XII).

Minor earthquakes occur nearly constantly around the world in places like California and Alaska in the US, as well as in Guatemala. Chile, Peru, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, the Azores in Portugal, Turkey, New Zealand, Greece, Italy, and Japan, but earthquakes can occur almost anywhere, including New York City, London, and Australia. Larger earthquakes occur less frequently. For example, in the United Kingdom, it has been calculated that the average recurrences are: an earthquake of 3.7 - 4.6 every year, an earthquake of 4.7 - 5.5 every 10 years, and an earthquake of 5.6 or larger every 100 years.

Earthquakes may lead to disease, lack of basic necessities, loss of life, higher insurance premiums, general property damage, road and bridge damage, and collapse or future collapse of buildings. Therefore, we must be prepared for earthquakes at any time. People should be evacuated once earthquake has been predicted. Stronger infrastructure should also be built to reduce the chance of buildings collapsing.

E-Learning 2 March 2010: Multiple Intelligence Test

This is the result of the multiple intelligence test that I took. Well, I feel that it is partially accurate. Based on the results, it shows that my logical ability is strong. I think it is true. I have been doing well in Mathematics for a long time. It also shows that I am good at visualising pictures, which is quite true. I tend to visualise pictures in my mind everytime I think of something. However, the results show that I am not good in naturalistic areas, which in my opinion, is not true.
